Cameron Smith – happy or sad or even a little indifferent?
You sense he’s relieved to get in the clubhouse with a red number after last week’s stumble at the Australian PGA Championship, but he has a lot of ground to make up with Cameron Davis (-9) eight shots clear after Smith’s opening 71, which included four birdies and three bogeys.
“Frustrating,” Smith said. “I think it could have been a few less, to be honest. I kind of missed a couple of putts there towards the end of the round when I started to feel alright. A little bit frustrating, but it was better.
“I think there’s definitely something to build on there, for sure. I didn’t feel as kind of anxious and uncomfortable I guess. There’s a couple of really tough shots out there, particularly tee shots, so it was good to just commit.
“I hit a couple in the water, but it was nice to just feel that commitment and actually try and hit the right shot. Obviously, you don’t want them to get too far away, but I’ve played pretty well around The Aussie in the past and another place where I feel really comfortable. I just need to clean up that longer stuff and not put so much pressure on my putter. I think it will be a good day.”
