One dead, another missing as flames tear through inner west home

One person has died after a fire tore through a home in Sydney’s inner west, and there are grave fears for a second person who is unaccounted for as rescue workers search the rubble.

Fire crews were called to Irrara Street in Croydon just after 4am and found a house ablaze, with flames shooting through the roof, Nine reports.

Firefighters escalated to a full emergency response and six trucks from across the inner west and south-west attended the scene.

The blaze was extinguished, but the house’s roof collapsed and extensive damage was caused to the property.

Fire and Rescue crews are desperately searching through the rubble for a person believed to be a resident of the home, with the destroyed remains of the house complicating efforts.

Police said the body of a person was found inside the house and is yet to be formally identified.

A crime scene has been established as police launch an investigation into the circumstances of the fire.

Emergency crews are still on site and police are advising people to avoid the area.
