While he has long been considered a fan of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, Tszyu has surprisingly revealed he initially started out cheering Johns’ Newcastle Knights during a conversation that has left both the old No.6 and his son Cooper in stitches during the latest episode of their popular Backstage podcast.
It comes as The Soul Taker prepares to become a two-time world champion in Las Vegas this Sunday, where he faces towering WBC super welterweight king Sebastian Fundora.
Kicking back in a green lounge chair, and with Unfinished Business writ large across the front of his white tee, Tszyu spent the best part of 50 minutes discussing everything from Jake Paul, Tyson Fury and Zab Judah becoming a nurse through to exactly how many litres of blood the human body can hold.

The Soul Taker also unveiled his pick for greatest fighter of all time – and without giving it away, the answer followed an entertaining ‘Last Man Standing’ countdown involving the likes of Roberto Duran, Mike Tyson, Gennady Golovkin, Manny Pacquiao, even his old man.
Elsewhere, the conversation also waltzed wonderfully through his previous sparring sessions with Pacman, brother Nikita walking through the scrub and Matty being forced by wife Trish to sleep on the lounge after losing his credit card.
Yet arguably the best moment arrived late in proceedings, when Tszyu revealed he started his rugby league life as – gasp — a Newcastle Knights fan.
While now a supporter of the Rabbitohs – whose Hollywood owner Russell Crowe has expressed interest in attending Sunday’s fight — Tszyu told the Johns boys he was actually supporting the Knights way back when Matty was wearing the six.
Which all makes sense, right?

Afterall, the group had just spent several minutes discussing not only Tim having fought three times in Newcastle, but also Hall of Fame father Kostya having made seven appearances there – with Johns snr even recalling the time he punched Roger Mayweather through the ropes.
Which is why Cooper then asked if this was why he’d been a Knights fan, because dad was fighting there so often.
“No,” Tszyu grinned, before turning to Matty to deliver the punchline, “I really liked Andrew”.
Cue hysterics.
“Do you know what?” Matt said finally, “do you know what you did there Tim?
“You looked at me and said ‘no, I really liked Andrew’.
“I actually thought you were about to say me. I thought ‘ah, f***ing hell … Trish guess what?”
Pushed on how a kid who played so little footy found himself being a Joey fan, Tszyu continued: “I remember the movie. He had a movie yeah?”
At which point, Cooper mentioned an old coaching video Joey did for Nike.
“A documentary,” Tszyu continued.
“I remember it always being on the TV at home.”
Almost certainly, Tszyu is referring to the DVD entitled Joey: The Andrew Johns Story So Far.
Released in 2002, when Tim Tszyu was six, the video is part documentary, part coaching clinic – with rugby league tips also offered up from that fella who, at the time, was hailed the world’s greatest player.

Elsewhere, Matty also recalled Joey catching up with Kostya in Newcastle during his fighting prime, and suggested they also met again in January when the legend was out here for a speaking tour.
“Or Joey said so,” Matty shrugged. “But Joey is a liar”.
At which point, Cooper interjected and asked the fighter “did you guys ever think about inviting dad to those dinners at all?”
Tszyu: “I was too young man. Don’t blame it on me.”
Minutes earlier, the talk had turned to rugby league when Johns snr asked Tszyu about his Bunnies.
“How are they going?” the fighter replied with a smile.
Coops: “They’re going alright, have you been watching them?”
Tszyu: “Nah.”
Matty: “You haven’t missed much to be honest.”
Tszyu, of course, is now in Las Vegas making final preparations for Sunday’s hyped world title rematch against WBC champ Fundora.

Back in March last year, The Soul Taker endured a bloody war with ‘The Towering Inferno’ after suffering a nasty head cut in the second round – and eventually lost the T Mobile Arena headliner via split decision.
Midway through the podcast, the memory of that bout prompted Cooper to declare “you know, the human body hasn’t got that much blood in it”.
To which, the old man, mockingly replied: “You’d be surprised”.
Eventually, it was determined we hold roughly eight litres – at least a quarter of which they estimated Tszyu lost against his oversized rival.
“Yeah, would’ve been, ey,” the fighter agreed.
From there, the trio then disappeared down another path about horses, jugular veins and eventually into Nikita’s bushwalks, Jai Opetaia and Tszyu revealing the “beast” who is his favourite fighter.
