“We’ve allocated an extra 1,300 places to the five universities here in WA for students to start a university degree next year.”

Clare said individual universities would get to choose for themselves which courses would benefit, but that he hoped more people would be encouraged to take up teaching.

Clare also spoke about the school pilot commencing in WA next year, where four schools will become ‘service hubs’ for students to access not just an education, but also medical needs, allied health needs and mental health support.

“There is an obvious and real connection between education and health,” he said.

“The evidence on my desk says that if you’re struggling with your mental health, by Year 9, on average, you’re likely to be about 1½ to 2½ behind the rest of the class.”

Girrawheen Senior High School, Clarkson Primary School, Ashburton Drive Primary School and Roebourne District High School will take part in the $21 million trial.
