US-Iran war live updates: Huge sign that Donald Trump has ‘lost control’ of Iran war
Welcome to our live updates of the US and Israel’s war with Iran.
US President Donald Trump has lost control of the war with Iran, US Democratic Senator Chris Murphy says.
Mr Murphy’s comments came after Mr Trump took to Truth Social and threatened to “obliterate” Iran’s power plants if the Strait of Hormuz was not reopened.
“He’s lost control of the war and he is panicking,” Mr Murphy said, while sharing the president’s threatening post.
Mr Murphy, a leading member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, earlier described the military operation as “Trump’s insane war”.
Earlier on Sunday Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform: “If Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST!”
Iran said it would respond in kind if Mr Trump makes good on his promise, targeting “all energy, information technology and desalination infrastructure belong to the US and the regime in the region” if its own is “violated by the enemy”.
It comes as footage emerged showing the moment an Iranian missile hit Dimona in southern Israel, which is home to the country’s nuclear facility.
First responders from Israel’s national emergency service Magen David Adom said 33 people were wounded in the strike on Dimona. Those injured included a boy with shrapnel wounds who was in serious condition.
AFPTV footage from the scene showed a large crater gouged into the ground next to piles of rubble and twisted metal, as well as buildings with their windows blown out.
Iranian state TV said the missile attack on Dimona was a “response” to an earlier strike on its own nuclear site at Natanz.
In the nearby town of Arad, 84 people were hurt by another missile, 10 of them seriously.
