US-Iran war live updates: President goes rogue as staggering cost sets in

Peace talks between the US and Iran, scheduled for Pakistan’s capital of Islamabad, are in disarray after Tehran said it might not even bother to turn up.

But within Iran, there are powerful calls for a resolution.

The country’s president Masoud Pezeshkian, in new comments, has said “continuing the conflict benefits no one”.

He has cited the huge economic cost to Iran which would be losing $A612 million a day due to the Strait of Hormuz blockade.

Mr Pezeshkian is only one part of Iran’s power structure, however. There are concerns the more radical Revolutionary Guards may be pulling the strings for more than usual.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump’s popularity has sunk to a new low during his second term according to a poll by US network NBC.

It states only 37 per cent of voters approve of the US president’s performance while as much as half of Americans “strongly disapprove” of his actions.

More than 80 per cent of Republicans are behind him, but that figure is falling and just over half of those voters “strongly approve” of his performance.

Two thirds of voters disapprove of his handling of Iran and inflation, the survey found.
