Car hits crowd in Newcastle during Knights pre-grand final farewell, multiple people injured

Emergency services were called to Newcastle Link Road at Wallsend at around 9.30am this morning.
A car has hit a crowd of people in Newcastle this morning as supporters gathered for a Newcastle Knights pre-grand final farewell.
NSW Ambulance has confirmed that several people were injured. Emergency services were summoned to Newcastle Link Road at Wallsend at around 9.30am this morning.
Paramedics from 10 ambulances and three helicopters are treating people at the scene. Police are also at the scene.
“Due to a major incident, the team bus has been diverted from the planned route,” the Newcastle Knights said in a post to social media.
“We apologise to anybody who was waiting and missed the boys, but public safety is our priority.”

A statement from NSW Police to the ABC said that the driver of the car had been arrested at the scene.
“Several people have been injured and are currently receiving treatment at the scene,” police said.
“It’s heartbreaking to see fans who were sending off their grand final team involved in such a terrible incident,” said NSW premier Chris Minns in a statement on social media.
