Gibbons confident investment in Dividends will pay off at Grafton

Jockey Andrew Gibbons is hoping for a successful hit-and-run mission to Grafton on Tuesday where he has two rides on the seven-race card.

Gibbons, who travels a lot to country meetings, will link with impressive debut winner Dividends Paid when it lines up in the Cansdell Signs Class 1 Handicap (1040m) for trainer Cathleen Rode. Gibbons combined with Dividends Paid when it had its first race start at Coffs Harbour last month and he was impressed with the outcome.

“He had trialled well at Port Macquarie before he stepped out for his debut at Coffs Harbour and the trial was good,” Gibbons said. “He lived right up to that when he won in really impressive fashion at Coffs Harbour.

“He jumped well, went to the lead, did everything right, and held them safely to the line to score.

“There was a lot to like about the win and from the good barrier he should race on the speed again at Grafton and take plenty of running down again.”

Dividends Paid will face stern opposition from the Paul Shailer-prepared Hey Daisy, which resumed from a spell with a sound second at the Sunshine Coast behind Larado, which confirmed that form by winning in Brisbane in metropolitan grade at the weekend. Dylan Turner takes the ride on Hey Daisy at Grafton.

The second ride for Gibbons at Grafton will be the Rode-trained Love Rat in the Hip Pocket Workwear & Safety Grafton Benchmark 66 Handicap (1040m).

“He’s a horse that has been around for a while, but he bobs up every now and again having won six of his 49 starts,” Gibbons said. “He’s actually run well at Coffs Harbour and Grafton in two of his last three starts either side of a 10th at Taree. If he can repeat those efforts, then he could easily get into the money.”

Leading trainer Matthew Dunn only has one runner at Grafton and that will be favourite Lord Of Flames, which runs in the Causley Wholesale Country Boosted Maide Plate (1040m) with Andrew Mallyon aboard.
