Latest Premier League transfer news and rumours, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg loan, Tottenham roster, Amadou Onana signing

The 2024-25 Premier League season is just under a month away and the transfer market is starting to heat up, with Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham already confirming one move.

French Ligue 1 club Marseille announced Tuesday the arrival on loan of Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Tottenham.

Denmark international Hojbjerg has 81 caps and played in all four of his country’s matches at Euro 2024, where they were eliminated at the last-16 stage by hosts Germany.

The 28-year-old began his professional career at German Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich before moving to England when he signed for Southampton in 2016.

After four years on the south coast, Hojbjerg joined Tottenham in August 2020 and went on to make 184 appearances for the club.

Marseille have not specified the financial terms, but several sports media have reported a compulsory purchase option of around 13 million euros ($A21 million).

Hojbjerg is the latest arrival in a busy close season for Marseille and joins midfielder Ismael Kone, defender Lilian Brassier and former-Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, as well as new coach Roberto De Zerbi, at the Stade Velodrome.

He may not be the only Tottenham player on the move either, with Bryan Gil and Sergio Reguilon left off of the team’s pre-season training camp tour squad.

It comes as they were instead given permission to explore potential transfer opportunities.

VILLA’S $97M SPLASH ON EVERTON MIDFIELDER

Elsewhere, Aston Villa signed Belgium midfielder Amadou Onana from Everton in a deal worth a reported £50 million ($A97 million).

Onana agreed a five-year contract with Villa, who had been searching for a replacement for Douglas Luiz after the Brazilian’s move to Juventus.

The 22-year-old failed to make an impact at Everton after arriving from Lille two years ago.

But, after featuring for Belgium at Euro 2024, Onana has been given the chance to revive his Premier League career by Villa boss Unai Emery.

Capped 17 times by Belgium, Onana made 72 appearances for Everton, scoring four goals.

He joins Villa with the club looking forward to their first Champions League campaign since 1983 after last season’s fourth-place finish in the Premier League.

It has been a busy close season for Emery, who had already signed Ross Barkley from Luton, Juventus duo Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea, Sheffield United’s Cameron Archer, Ian Maatsen from Chelsea, former Hull winger Jaden Philogene and Everton’s Lewis Dobbin.

Both Villa and Everton have been juggling their squads in a bid to stay within the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
