Paris Olympics: Australian hockey player arrested in Paris allegedly trying to buy cocaine
An Australian hockey player is in French custody after allegedly trying to purchase cocaine on Paris.
The Paris prosecutor’s office has confirmed a 28-year-old Australian hockey player was arrested “after officers witnessed an attempt to purchase cocaine in the 9th arrondissement”.
No charges have been laid.
The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) said in a statement that it is making arrangements to support the athlete.
The player was taken into custody on Tuesday evening, Paris time.
“The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has confirmed an Australian hockey team member is in custody after being arrested in Paris on August 6,” the AOC said in a statement.
“No charges have been laid.
“The AOC is continuing to make enquiries and arrange support for the team member.”
No confirmation has been made about why the player was arrested.
It has not been confirmed if the player was a member of the Kookaburras or Hockeyroos, who were both eliminated this week in their respective quarterfinals.
The women’s Hockeyroos were defeated by China on Monday 3-2, while the Kookaburras were knocked-out by the Netherlands on Sunday.
