US-Iran war, fuel crisis live updates: Donald Trump blasts Iran, announces major move
US President Donald Trump has announced that the US will begin a sweeping blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, vowing to fight back against “WORLD EXTORTION” and ensure that no one paying tolls to Iran will get through the critical oil chokepoint.
“Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz,” Mr Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Sunday local time.
“Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL!”
It comes after US peace talks with Iran collapsed in Pakistan over the weekend.
US Vice President JD Vance left Islamabad on Sunday without a deal after negotiations with a team led by Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf – the highest-level meeting between the two sides since the 1979 Islamic revolution.
The talks were meant to solidify a fragile two-week ceasefire with a final deal to end the conflict that has engulfed the Middle East, leaving thousands dead and roiling global markets. But no conclusions were reached.
“We leave here with a very simple proposal, a method of understanding that is our final and best offer. We’ll see if the Iranians accept it,” Mr Vance told reporters.
Meanwhile former British prime minister Boris Johnson, while acknowledging there’s “no doubt” Mr Trump created “a mess” in the Middle East, has argued European nations have “all made a big mistake” by refusing to help him fix it.
