WA MP served no grounds eviction notice from Guildford landlord
Independent MP Wilson Tucker rallied alongside tenants and housing advocates on the steps of WA Parliament on Tuesday to demand greater protection for renters after he received a “without grounds” termination notice last week.
Tucker is currently renting a house in Guildford and said as one of the few MPs who rent their home, he had firsthand experience navigating the rental crisis.
He has drafted an amendment to ban ‘without grounds’ evictions for WA’s 700,000 renters, a practice he described as unjust and unconscionable.
“We cannot rely on the government to act in the best interests of renters,” he said.
“That’s why it’s so important for us to use our voices and our votes to demand the change we need.
“No one should live in fear of losing their home at the whim of a landlord. It’s time for our laws to reflect the dignity and rights of all renters.
“Just as landlords wield the power to evict tenants from their homes, we, as renters, hold the power to evict the government from office.”
Greens WA moved two sets of amendments to get rid of the practice of no-grounds evictions from the Residential Tenancies Act.
The first amendment will seek to remove no-grounds evictions from the act entirely, ensuring that renters in both the private market and in government-owned housing are safe from being evicted for no reason.
