Warning issued to prepare homes, vehicles for more severe SEQ storms

Miles said that any persons needing assistance should contact the SES hotline and repeated the BoM’s warnings to stay away from fallen power lines.

“Live power lines are delaying the clean-up in many areas and it’s really important that everybody treats power lines as live.

“I know that’s…frustrating but it’s really, really important. We’ve already lost lives to this event and we can’t afford to lose any further.”

Around 32 volunteers from the Rapid Relief Team (RRT) have mobilised on the Gold Coast today to assist with the clean up from storms and wild weather over the Christmas break.

Motorists are being urged to postpone non-essential travel plans, with storms already causing disruptions this morning up and down the coast.

“If you can avoid travel when there is severe weather events, please do so, and use public transport when you can,” transport and main roads minister Bart Mellish said.

As well as taking extra precautions, he asked drivers to be patient as crews work to clear debris and man intersections that have lost power.

“There will be a lot of crews on the roads cleaning up and connecting and managing intersections…many of the police and TMR people who are around there have been working non-stop.”

Disaster assistance was activated for more areas this morning with Miles confirming the government had now received 35,000 applications for assistance.

Queensland police commissioner Katarina Carroll urged those in storm affected areas to check in on vulnerable neighbours, especially those with limited access to emergency updates.

The risk of severe thunderstorms will continue through many locations across the state tomorrow for New Year’s Eve.
