$4m Aussie plays key hand as ‘amazing’ IPL star goes ballistic in super over thriller
Rinku Singh hit an unbeaten 83 and took five catches as Kolkata Knight Riders edged out Lucknow Super Giants in a Super Over in the IPL on Sunday.
Uncapped Indian left-arm quick Mohsin Khan claimed the tournament’s best bowling figures of the season with 5-23 to restrict three-time champions Kolkata to 155-7 at Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium.

The total could have been much lower if not for Rinku, who rescued Kolkata from 93-7 with his 51-ball blitz and hit four successive sixes in the final over.
“Really happy with the victory,” said Kolkata skipper Ajinkya Rahane. “The way we played after the 16 overs, Rinku’s innings was amazing. That last over and getting the momentum to our side was amazing.” Lucknow made a sluggish start in reply and lost Mitchell Marsh for just one. Aiden Markram made 31 and skipper Rishabh Pant added 42, both relatively slowly, before the lower order kept the hosts in the hunt.
Lucknow went into the final over needing 17 to win with impact substitute Himmat Singh and Mohammed Shami at the crease.
Kartik Tyagi bowled two no-balls before he dismissed Himmat for 19, but Shami hit a six off the final delivery to tie the scores as Lucknow finished on 155-8.
Spinner Sunil Narine took two wickets in three balls to cut short Lucknow’s Super Over as they managed just one run. Rinku returned to hit the winning shot for Kolkata.
Lucknow sank to the bottom of the table with six defeats in eight outings. Kolkata are eighth after only their second win of the season.
– ‘Need a break’ –
“I think we definitely need a break,” said Pant. “I think we’re going to refresh, there is always pressure and it’s going to be pressure game always, but at the same time, we have to look for answers inside, not outside.” Rinku made his presence felt in the field with catches to remember, including a stunning grab in the deep to dismiss Markram off Cameron Green.
He again did for Markram with a relay catch in the Super Over, as Rovman Powell snared the ball in the deep and smartly flipped it back inside the rope for Rinku to complete the effort.
Earlier, Mohsin was on fire after he dismissed both Tim Seifert and Rahane. A rare dismissal of Angkrish Raghuvanshi for obstructing the field made matters worse for Kolkata.
Raghuvanshi took off for a run with Green only to be sent back, and as he turned, Shami’s throw hit him, which stopped the ball from reaching stumps.
Shami appealed and the third umpire ruled the batter out for changing direction to block the line of the throw, leaving an angry Raghuvanshi to trudge off the field.
Mohsin struck regular blows until Rinku hit back in a partnership with Green, who made 34, and then single-handedly steered his team to a competitive total.
Earlier, South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada led a disciplined attack with figures of 3-25 to help Gujarat Titans hammer Chennai Super Kings by eight wickets in the IPL on Sunday.
Pace bowler Rabada struck twice in his second over to set the tone for his team’s domination as they restricted Chennai to 158-7 at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.
Sai Sudharsan hit 87 off 46 balls to steer Gujarat home with 20 balls to spare as they bounced back after two defeats to move to fifth spot in the 10-team table.
The top four teams at the end of the league stage will advance to the playoffs. Sudharsan and Shubman Gill, who made 33, laid the foundation of the chase with a 58-run opening stand.
Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmad struck in the seventh over to have Gill stumped thanks to Sanju Samson’s quick glovework as he removed the bails with the batters’ foot centimetres off the ground.
Sudharsan stood firm and put on a partnership of 97 with Jos Buttler, who made an unbeaten 39.
Dewald Brevis took a stunning catch in the deep to dismiss Sudharsan off Akeal Hosein with Gujarat needing four for victory and Buttler then hit the winning six.
Rabada was ably supported by fellow quick Mohammed Siraj (1-23) to dent Chennai with regular strikes despite an unbeaten 74 by skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Rabada stood out with his pace and accuracy that first got the in-form Samson caught behind for 11 and three balls later dismissed Urvil Patel for four.
Siraj got Sarfaraz Khan, who came in as impact substitute, for a first-ball duck and the batting slipped further when Brevis departed for two.
Gaikwad played a defiant knock and reached his first fifty of the season with help from Shivam Dube, who made 22, Kartik Sharma (15) and Jamie Overton (18).
But the effort was not enough as Chennai suffered their fifth defeat in eight matches.
