Geelong have moved into fifth spot, keeping their top six chances alive with a hard fought win over Collingwood – who found overcoming a 49-point margin from midway through the second quarter too difficult.
The Magpies dragged themselves back into the match bit by bit from late in the second quarter to get within 16 points at the start of the final quarter.
But the Cats were too strong in the air and out of the middle with Shannon Neale, Jay Polkinghorne and Ollie Henry kicking eight goals (and a goal apiece in the final quarter) and taking eight marks inside 50 to eventually kill the Magpies off.
Geelong made the most of the unusual start when both teams ran out to songs a decade old in an attempt to win new fans rather than the theme song and started the game straight away. It confused Tom Stewart, but apart from that not much was achieved.
Collingwood chose Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ classic Heads Will Roll as their song and Geelong said “No, no, no” and kicked nine of the first 10 goals of the game.
